Bacchanalia The bacchanalia were wild and mystic festivals of the Roman god Bacchus, known as Dionysus to the Greeks. In classical mythology, Dionysus or Dionysos, is the god of wine, the inspirer of ritual madness and ecstasy.  The bacchanalia were held in secret and attended by women only, in the grove of Simila, near the Aventine Hill, on March 16 and 17.
