Sawley Abbey Page Added

Sawley Abbey Page Added
Sawley Abbey was an abbey of Cistercian monks, set on the banks of the Ribble in the village of Sawley, Lancashire.
Created as a daughter-house of Newminster Abbey, it existed from 1147 until its dissolution in 1536, during the reign of King Henry VIII of all England, Ireland, and France.
At present very little of the Abbey has survived, much of the stone was used in local cottages and farms after the dissolution of the monastries. On a clear day, Pendle Hill can be seen in the background. Its ruins, which are controlled by English Heritage, are open to the public.
