Autumn Equinox

Autumn Equinox

Autumn Equinox

The waning crescent moon is just a smudge in this photo taken at dawn, just a few hours after the exact time of the Autumnal Equinox, 23 September, 2014. We tend to focus on the diminishing qualities of the moon as we slide towards the dark moon, but as I think of the things I want to let go, to diminish with the waning of the moon, an image jumps into my mind… of the other side, the bright side that is growing, looking outwards in space.

Autumn Equinox Dawn

Like many others, I think of qualities to let go as the moon wanes, spend a time of reflection over the dark moon phase and think of aspects to develop as the moon wanes again. As this image of bright pulsing moonlight from ‘the other side’ encroaches into my thoughts, I’m reminded of a poem I wrote on another dark moon.

When I look it up, it turns out to be another September… 2010… 4 years ago. 4 years… a leap year cycle.

The Earth takes approximately 365.25 days to go around the Sun. This is the reason we have a leap year every 4 years, to add another day to our calendar so that there is not a gradual drift of date through the seasons. For the same reason the precise time of the equinoxes are not the same each year, and generally will occur about 6 hours later each year, with a jump of a day (backwards) on leap years and it is only after a complete leap-year cycle of four centuries that these dates will be repeated… 400 years.

{I feel there is some significance here, but don’t know what just yet}

Crescent Moon

~Her Smile~

it seems her smile is fading...
not true
it seems her smile diminishes...
not true

look at the beauty of her tender smile
the twinkle in her eye
as she throws a backward glance...

she's there...
 out there.

turning her dazzling smile
to the one
who gives her light...

smiling her thanks
to the one
who brings us warmth...

returning her love
to the one
at the centre of our universe...

she turns
the fullness of her smile
back to honour the sun

Autumn Equinox

I feel we are missing something, by concentrating on just the visible phase of the moon. As it wanes to our eyes, the moon is waxing viewed from the other side. I start to think of release as I exhale and replenishment as I inhale… then find the release/renew is occurring simultaneously… as I see the waning moon before my eyes and the opposite waxing gibbous, almost full moon in space.

I automatically relate this to our healing practices; how often do we try to remove a pain, an illness, an undesirable habit, symptoms of a hurtful experience etc… ? It’s commonly accepted that western medicine treats symptoms rather than causes. Yet even those who accept that emotional disruptions give rise to physical symptoms will talk about dissolving hurts, removing barriers to healing etc.

As we work on our self-development, or work to heal our self or others, it’s important to remember that the replenishment is just as important as the removal or release… in fact it’s vital. Otherwise an emptiness is left… a vacuum… waiting to be filled. Hopefully by love & self respect, rather than another harmful or self destructive trait, so rather than wait and hope, work on a counterbalance…

Hmm, a revelation about balance… at the equinox… a time of celestial balance!

A timely reminder that now is a time of balance. I love the clarity of the picture of the crescent moon. It seems to bring a corresponding clarity in me also.
